Live Long and Prosper
Introduction
A little personal history may be useful at this point. Although I was always active as a young man a climbing accident in my mid twenties lead to several back operations and a degree of incapacity at times which could only be described as severe. Eventually, in my mid forties, I had to leave my job in the fire brigade and strike out into other areas. During my early fifties I suffered a seizure which nearly took my life and left me in great pain for much of the following year. Two years later, after I considered that I had made a full recovery, I suffered a heart attack and had to have a grand total of three stents put into the arteries supplying blood to that organ. That was some seven years ago now, seven years in which I have become more aware of my diet, turned my back on past habits and embraced the process of educating myself about exactly what is needed to achieve a long and healthy life.
This has taken me into the fields of gerontology, that of diet, of fitness and of lifestyle, and also lead me to think about the psychologicial choices we take and the attitudes we strike. All these factors have their place if one wants to live not only a long live but a healthy and happy one as well.
The blog will deal with some of the ideas that have worked for me and some of those that have not. It will look at evidence based scientific approaches to these questions rather than merely fad diets or simply the latest fitness craze. We are in this for the long term so we want to base our actions on solid, supported and sane approaches rather than jumping hither and thither with whatever is the fitness or diet fashion de jour.
Over the coming weeks, months and, hopefully at least, years I intend to to use this blog to examine many different areas relating to the topic of aging gracefully, healthily and happily. I hope you will join me on this journey!
If we are successful on this quest then, in the words of a certain Vulcan who is no longer with use, I hope we can all....
Live Long And Prosper!
